Dr. Jessica Scotchie Explains GLP-1 Medication Impacts on Birth Control in “Ask a Doctor” Feature

In Chattanooga Times Free Press, she addresses GLP-1 weight-loss drugs and oral contraceptives

Dr. Jessica Scotchie of Tennessee Reproductive Medicine

Dr. Jessica Scotchie was featured in an “Ask a Doctor” article in the Chattanooga Times Free Press addressing the common concern regarding whether popular GLP-1 weight-loss medications can make birth control pills less effective.

The article explains that certain GLP-1 medications work by slowing the rate at which the stomach empties. Because oral contraceptives are absorbed through the digestive tract, this delayed processing can interfere with the body’s ability to properly absorb the medication. Dr. Scotchie notes that while this is a significant factor, other side effects like vomiting or diarrhea can further complicate pill absorption.

Beyond absorption issues, Dr. Scotchie highlights an interesting metabolic shift: As patients lose weight and improve insulin resistance on these medications, they may begin ovulating more regularly. This boost in fertility, combined with potentially compromised birth control, has led to a rise in unexpected pregnancies.
