Embryo Adoption Raises Tough Questions

Laws may change to address them, making receiving a donated embryo more like adopting a child

embryo adoption TRMIn an article in the Chattanooga Times Free Press, TRM’s Dr. Rink Murray addresses the potential change in Tennessee law. TRM has been partnering with Bethany Christian Services of Greater Chattanooga for years to offer both parties involved in the embryo donation and receiving more of an adoption-like process. This includes visits by embryo-donating parents to recipients’ homes to ensure their embryo will go to a good home.

Donating embryos is not an easy thing to do. “It is giving up a potential child to a stranger. It’s nice to have adoption-level protections,” says Dr. Murray, adding that TRM patients receive that by working through Bethany. The possible change in Tennessee law would make receiving a donated embryo more like adopting a child than transferring a piece of property, as is the current case. The article addresses both sides of the argument.
