Post Coital Test*
The post coital test was once the mainstay of many fertility evaluations and some physicians still find this to be useful. To have this test performed, a couple has intercourse and the woman then goes to the physician’s office so a sample of cervical mucus can be evaluated to see if motile sperm are present.
If a physician sees a lot of sperm moving within the cervical mucus, this can be an inexpensive way to verify the presence of sperm.
The problem with post coital tests is that 50% of fertile couples will have an abnormal post-coital test, and 50% of infertile couples will have an abnormal post-coital test.
This means an abnormal test does not predict fertility.
*Please Note: Tennessee Reproductive Medicine does not perform post-coital tests.
